Beth Campbell
Without Ends
November 12 - January 30, 2010
Drawing from the uncertainties of everyday life, Beth Campbell has built a practice that fluidly transitions between drawing, sculpture and installation-based traditions. These efforts result in objects that, while derived from personal experience, capture universal confrontations with an unknown future.
The drawings and objects in this exhibition will also address the domestic environs of RM Schindler's Buck House – a modernist home built in 1934. Campbell's mobiles occupy and transform space in a manner that is at times soothing and confrontational. Their shape and structure is beautiful and familiar, consistent with a history of mobiles dating back to Alexander Calder, but their movement can drift into the chaotic as each mobile takes on a distinct personality. In recent installations of these works, Campbell has pushed the forms and added subtle and not so subtle color shifts to her repertoire. The mobiles maintain a strong connection to Campbell's ongoing drawing series My Potential Future Based on Present Circumstances in which a mundane activity or opportunity kicks off an organic flow chart of events yielding multiple outcomes and suggesting a range of multiple realities. In addition to creating a new drawing based on her LA experience, Campbell will create a new installation piece in response to her stay at the Buck House.
Beth Campbell has recently completed solo projects with the Whitney Museum of American Art, Manifesta 7, and the Public Art Fund. Previous shows include the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Art, PS1 Contemporary Art Center, Andrea Rosen Gallery, White Columns, the Drawing Room (London), and the Tang Museum. Her work is included in collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
