EVAN HECOX: UNNAMED PLACES
MAY 30 – OCTOBER 10, 2009
OPENING RECEPTION: SATURDAY, MAY 30, 4–8pm
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Country Club is pleased to present two new exhibitions by Christina Seely and Evan Hecox.
Christina Seely is a San Francisco-based photographer interested in the dialectic between the surface documentation of a photograph and the complex reality that lies beyond that surface. Lux, the scientific term for a unit measuring illumination, is an ongoing photographic project inspired by the disconnect between the intense beauty produced by manufactured light and the more complicated global consequences of generating electricity in such massive quantities.
For millions of years only dramatic shifts in terrain informed the reading of the earth’s surface from space. Now, the cumulative light from highly urbanized areas creates a new type of information and an understanding of the world that reflect the impact of the human race on the planet. Three regions of earth are visibly brighter on a NASA map of the world at night: the United States, Western Europe and Japan. Aside from being the wealthiest and most powerful regions in the world, they collectively emit approximately 45% of the world’s carbon emissions and are (along with China) the top consumers of electricity, energy, and resources. Lux consists of photographs that document the artificial glow produced by the 43 brightest cities from these three areas at night. Though certain aspects of each image might be recognizable, Seely makes an effort to document the cities from unexpected vantage points. Uninterested in the “postcard” view of a city, Seely finds dramatic perspectives and surprisingly intimate environments in these unconventional civic portraits. Each large-scale photograph is simply titled Metropolis (with a latitude/longitude subtitle) to de-emphasize the individual identities of the cities – Madrid can be confused for Cincinnati which can appear to be a park in Osaka.
Christina Seely lives and works in the Bay Area of California and teaches at California College of the Arts. Seely has recently exhibited at the Photographic Center Northwest, Seattle; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; The Photographic Resource Center, Boston; and The Bronx Museum, New York.
Unnamed Places consists of a new body of work by Colorado-based artist, Evan Hecox. Hecox’s works portray the essence of urban environments, depicting city scenes or isolated elements that are almost cinematic in their stark contrast and abstraction. Hecox is fascinated with the complexity of the urban landscape and people occupying the mundane surroundings that one would normally overlook. This new series of works are derived partly from Hecox’s own photographic explorations combined with his imagination and vintage found photos to generate moody images that evoke the psychological effects of a place. Like snapshots or filmstrips, his work captures the everyday existence of the average person traveling through the detritus of the modern metropolis.
Evan Hecox has exhibited worldwide, including exhibitions in Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo. Also working as a graphic artist, Hecox has collaborated with companies such as Chocolate Skateboards and Adidas. Hecox’s work has been featured in numerous publications including the recently released monograph, Urban Abstract.
